Tarifa
Tarifa is the southernmost town in continental Europe and a place with truly unique energy. You can get here from Bahía de Casares in about an hour, heading toward Algeciras. It is where the Mediterranean literally meets the Atlantic.
Tip for Casa del Sol guests
We recommend setting out in the morning so you can enjoy both the town and the beaches and return at sunset, which is absolutely magical in this part of Andalusia. The drive follows a beautiful coastal road with views of Africa.
Capital of wind
The town is known as the wind capital and a paradise for surfers from all over the world. Just walk along Playa de Los Lances and you will see dozens of colorful kites in the sky, surfers waiting for the right wave, and people enjoying the sea in their own way – through sport, a walk, or just relaxing at a beach bar. On clear days, you can clearly see the outline of the Moroccan coast and mountains around Tangier from Tarifa – Africa is truly “within reach.” Historically, Tarifa was an important defensive point thanks to its strategic location, as shown by the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno fortress from the 10th century, which offers stunning views of the sea and Africa.
Between oceans and in a maze of white streets
When visiting Tarifa, do not miss Isla de las Palomas, the place where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea symbolically divide. A walk along the causeway to the island gives you the unique feeling that you are truly standing “at the end of Europe.” The old town itself (Casco Antiguo) is a maze of narrow white streets, small squares, cafés, tapas bars, and shops with a bohemian atmosphere. You will also find small design boutiques, surf shops, and bars where locals, surfers, and travelers from all over the world mix in the evenings.
More than just a trip: Your moment of absolute freedom
We recommend a trip to Tarifa to all our guests who want to experience authentic Andalusia, feel the power of nature, and completely switch off from everyday worries for a while. It is not just a day-trip tip from Casa del Sol – it is an invitation to give yourself a moment of freedom, to breathe in the sea air, look at the horizon, and let your thoughts flow freely. Tarifa is exactly the place where you pause, look around, and realize how beautiful it is to be right here and right now.
Practical tips: What not to miss in Tarifa
Besides walks and soaking in the atmosphere, Tarifa offers several specific places and activities worth adding to your itinerary:
- Isla de las Palomas and the “division of seas”: Walk along the causeway that connects the mainland with the island. On the left you will see the calmer Mediterranean Sea, and on the right the wilder Atlantic Ocean. It is a fascinating contrast you will not experience elsewhere in Europe.
- Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno fortress: This well-preserved Moorish fortress from the 10th century offers not only a look into the history of conflicts between Christians and Muslims, but also some of the best views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the African coast.
- Whale and dolphin watching: Boats leave from Tarifa’s port for cetacean-watching trips. Because the strait is narrow and deep, the chances of seeing dolphins, pilot whales, or even orcas are very high.
- Valdevaqueros beach and sand dune: If you drive a little beyond the town, you will reach Valdevaqueros beach with a huge sand dune. Climbing it takes some effort, but the view of the turquoise sea and surfers below is absolutely worth it.
- Gastronomic experience – Atún de Almadraba: Tarifa is famous for tuna fishing using the traditional almadraba method. Be sure to try fresh tuna in one of the local restaurants (for example at El Francés bar) – it is a world-class culinary experience.
- Shopping in the old town streets: Tarifa has its own distinct “boho-chic” style. You will find many original boutiques with clothing, handmade jewelry, and accessories you cannot buy elsewhere.
🌬️ Watch out for the wind
In Tarifa, the wind is usually either Levante (strong easterly wind) or Poniente (cooler westerly wind).
- Tip for you: Even if there is no wind in Casares and it is 30°C, Tarifa can feel much colder. Bring a sweatshirt or a light windbreaker, otherwise the wind will “style” your hair more than you would like. 😅
- Bring sunglasses: Not only because of the sun, but also because the wind can blow sand around on the beaches.
